Our History and Purpose

 
History
 
The Taiwan Center Foundation of Greater Los Angeles is a non-profit organization. In February 1998, the family of Ken John Wang donated the property at the corner of Garvey Avenue and Walnut Grove Avenue in the city of Rosemead to the foundation to to become the future home of the Taiwan Center. Later that year, responding to Mr. Li-Pei Wu's ardent call for action, Southern California Taiwanese Americans held a million dollar fund-raising event to raise money for the establishment of the Taiwan Center. Mr. Li-Pei Wu was then elected to be the first chairperson of the Board of the Foundation.
 
Mission Statement
 
The Foundation is organized and shall be operated not for profit, but exclusively for the promotion of Taiwanese culture and heritage by means of charitable, cultural, literary, and educational activities.
 
Organizational Structure
 
The Taiwan Center Foundation of Greater Los Angeles is managed by its Board of Directors. There are 36 board members, including one Chairperson, who also serves as the Chief Executive Officer of the Taiwan Center. The Board consists of four Vice Presidents, a Secretary, two Assistant Secretaries, a Treasurer, an Assistant Treasurer, a Controller, and an Assistant Controller. To better plan and implement the projects of the Foundation, there are ten committees and fourteen working groups under the Board of Directors. The Foundation currently has over eight hundred members and fifty affiliated organizations in its membership. The Taiwan Center of Greater Los Angeles is considered by the Taiwanese Americans to be the leader of the Taiwanese American community in Greater Los Angeles.
 
Purpose
 
  • To support activities which foster public knowledge and appreciation of Taiwanese culture and heritage.
  • To Serve as a forum where Taiwanese Americans of Southern California may voice concerns of mutual interest in a concerted and coordinated effort with allied non-profit groups and with the community.
  • To promote and encourage community and civic spirit among Taiwanese Americans of Southern California.
  • To foster goodwill and friendship among Taiwanese Americans in Southern California and residents of other ethnicities and cultures.
  • To strengthen the bond between the people of Taiwan and the people of the United States.
  • To preserve materials which represent the quality and history of the Taiwanese American community's development in Southern California.
